CADBURY 6 LUFFS 0 (30/10/04) Presidents Cup
|
THERE was bad news and good news for the Loughborough Football Club on Saturday. Bad news ... The first team were hammered out of site in the Presidents Cup by what has to be said is the best team Cadbury
have had since Loughborough joined the Mid Com. Meanwhile, back at The Drome the second team were hammered out of sight by Caterpillar in the league and The Luffs player/coach Joe Mulligan sustained a broken leg.
We all wish him a quick recovery, he will be missed.
Good news though, while all this was going on Thimblemill got beat 4-1 in
the league and subsequently The Luffs went above them on
goal difference.
The Luffs rose precariously out of the relegation places for the first time in twelve months. The game, well it began impressively, both teams showed some good crisp passing and good control but it was a case of who could keep it up the longest and who could finish and The Luffs eventually came off second best.
Cadbury had an early shot just over the bar but Loughborough replied and Chris James found the side netting from a tight angle. Cadbury again just over the top and Loughborough delivered a free kick just a bit too long.
Cadbury opened their scoring spree after fifteen minutes, the loose ball fell kindly to Kevin Heeley and he beat the new Loughborough keeper Paul Buck from close range. That makes six keepers this season as The Luffs keep upping the standard. The second goal came quickly and was lucky as Jason Lane sliced his clearance and the ball spun inside the near post of an OG. At two down Loughborough worked their way back into the game but couldn't find the net although James came close with a shot just over.
With fifteen minutes to go to half time The Luffs were competing well but Cadbury struck with a vengeance before the break. Derek Tester found the bottom corner to make it three and then did it again to make it four. While Loughborough were reeling Kevin Heeley ran through for what must have been an offside goal but the linesman missed it and Loughborough went in at half time five goals down.
Managers Anthony Barratt and Darren Barber rang the chances using all three of their substitutes and steadied the ship but this Cadbury side were a bit special and took some containing. Paul Buck made a good save for Loughborough and Chris James should have pulled one back going clear on the Cadbury keeper Grant Norton who narrowed his angles well and the shot went wide.
The combination of Cadbury taking their foot off the accelerator and Loughborough sorting out their organisation meant there was nothing much to choose between the two teams but it was all over bar the shouting by half time, there was no coming back. Loughborough might have had a couple of goals, at time they passed well and created some openings but it was Cadbury who had the first and last say in this game as Kevin Heeley completed his hat trick late in the came to make it a convincing 6-0 win for the chocolate men.
