LUFFS 2 KENILWORTH 3 (30/08/04)
|
ANOTHER league defeat for Loughborough but a much more encouraging performance and the first goals of the season. Loughborough looked good going forward in this game for the first time this season with new faces Paco Jose Box and Warren Ried both having early chances to score.
This game settled into a pattern with Kenilworth having good possession but with Loughborough breaking much more decisively. Snewin saved from close range and with the rebound Kenilworth found the side netting but it was not surprise in this first half when The Luffs took the lead.
Fast incisive football saw Craig Haynes break down the left and his low shot found the net and Loughborough were in the lead and looking good for it. Matt Kearns saw his shot cleared off the line before the half time break and his side went in in the lead for the first time this season.
Loughborough began the second half well but as it progressed it was the second half that brought their downfall yet again. Loughborough worked the move of the game quick and incisive and the powerful diving header from the Spanish lad Paco Jose Box skimmed the Kenilworth bar and would surely have changed the course of this game.
As it was a header levelled the scores for Kenilworth and a deflected shot gave them a 1-2 lead and it has to be said the gods were not smiling on The Luffs"in this half. Kenilworth stole a third with a floating shot but Loughborough produced a late rally and so nearly took a point. Robert Matthews. yet another new face hit a low shot past keeper Stoney to make it 2-3 and Kenilworth were hanging on the their narrow lead for dear life.
Haynes headed just over as Loughborough mounted a concerted effort in the final minutes and the visitors were pinned back and looking seriously vulnerable. The game finished with Kenilworth desperately clearing a goal mouth scramble and hanging on till the end.
Nothing to show but an exciting game to the last and it has been a long time since The Luffs produced such and encouraging performance, Home again this Saturday to Old Hill Town (Kick Off 2.45pm). Saturday sees the newly formed Loughborough Res take the field away at Markfield kick off 2pm in the North Leicestershire League Division One.
