ASFORDBY 0 LUFFS 1 (29/11/03)
THE LUFFS ground out a place in the quarter finals of the Leicestershire Senior Cup on Saturday but it took extra time and just the one goal to decide it. This was a case of never mind the quality feel the result as Loughborough registered their first victory since the last round of the cup against Kirby Muxloe. It was a grim affair, two below par teams battled against the elements as the wind whipped down the Asfordby pitch and for ninety minutes neither side looked as if they would ever find the net.

Asfordby had the wind at their backs for the first half although Stevenson delivered a good ball to Richardson early in the game but he miss controlled in the box and from then on the Asfordby side aided by the strong wind advantage camped in the Loughborough half. You would have been forgiven for thinking The Luffs might be in for another drubbing but it soon became apparent that Asfordby were virtually incapable of finishing what they kept starting and Loughborough could well defend for an entire half and pinch it with their wind advantaged half.

So the first half went Asfordby headed wide, Asfordby found the side netting, Asfordby's free kick saved by keeper Springthorpe, but it all meant nothing when half time came and it was still 0-0.

In the second half the roles were simple reversed, Loughborough pilled on the pressure and Asfordby took their turn to defend and the result was exactly the same. In between, Richardson rattled the Asfordby bar early in the half and Gunn could have done better than a wild shot when clear through. The chance of the half fell to Stevenson midway through the half and if he had converted a header from just five yards out we would all have been sparred the extra time, but straight into the keepers hands went his effort.

The first half of extra time again saw Asfordby attack with the wind at their backs, but credit the stubborn Loughborough defence who kept them out and declared this to be the first clean sheet of the season. This game was crying out for just one magic moment and it came midway through the second half of extra time. It took a couple of mistakes in the Asfordby defence to create but when Richardson latched on to the loose ball it flew into the bottom corner and that was that. Credit the senior league side who pushed to the end and gave Loughborough a few scary moments but when it was all said and done this Asfordby side were never going to score a goal in a million years and would probable have missed all their penalties.

So into the quarter finals of the Leicestershire Senior Cup go The Luffs and down to earth they come this Saturday at home to Cadbury Athletic (Kick off 1.30 PM) in the Mid Com Presidents Cup. You would do well not to write The Luffs off in this too, there's extra time and penalties if the scores are level.
