LUFFS 1 OLD HILL TOWN 0 (29/3/03)
LOUGHBOROUGH put an end to their two game run of defeats on Saturday with the narrowest of victories against Old Hill Town, not that this game was ever going any way but Loughborough's it was just not a very convincing scoreline.

Old Hill enjoyed some early possession in this game but mainly because The Luffs simple couldn't get out of bed and their lack of dominance against an ordinary Old Hill side lasted for most of the first half. Gunn tried a long shot but it was never going to trouble keeper Westwood while at the other end a similarly tame shot was gathered by the Loughborough keeper Springthorpe.

Johnson's floating cross had Springthorpe in all sorts of trouble before he managed to tip is over the bar and defender Watkiss headed clear under pressure.

Bevan went past Fairey as if wasn't there but there was no one there to meet his cross in a nondescript first half that was best forgotten and finished 0-0.

In the second half the Loughborough side showed a little more enterprise but still well short of the standard expected. In a ten minute periods which featured Ian Stevenson, he delivered a cross which should have been converted, very nearly got himself on the end of a low cross then delivered the back post corner for Mark Edwards to head the one and only goal of the afternoon.

What was required at this stage was a regular supply of goals which would have given this game a respectable three or four goal margin but despite a period of good possession football The Luffs never looked like scoring again.

Springthorpe made a save from an Old Hill free kick but it wasn't that difficult and Julian Marriott drafted into the side to fill the vacant striking position left by the injury to Paul O'Callaghan went on a run and shot just over the top.

For a while The Luffs threatened as Gunn delivered a cross and Marriott came close but the visitors weren't finished off and a deflected shot went just over. In the end it was a case of never mind the quality count the points as The Luffs ran out winners by the one goal.

Now begins the run in to the end of the season, nine games left with seven of them away from home and even with The Luffs inconsistent form over the season there may well still be the Premier Division Crumbs to be had as certain clubs consider their future.

Away at Wilmcote on Saturday, one of the current form teams and a performance like this will almost certainly end in defeat (kick off 2.45pm).
