KENILWORTH 1 LUFFS 1 (26/08/02)
SATURDAY may have seen Loughborough beaten by a better side, but Bank Holiday Monday saw them struggle to take a point against a mediocre Kenilworth team who by the end of the game had missed enough clear cut chances to have destroyed The Luffs.

It was not impressive stuff from the Loughborough club who for many Mid Com pundits were candidates for promotion to the Premier this season… but certainly not of the seasons form so far.

Allen was first to show for Kenilworth but then Loughborough had an appeal for a penalty turned down, albeit a slim chance. Loughborough should have gone ahead, Spencer was guilty of missing one of the many easy chances for both sides in this game, shooting wide of the mark from close in. Loughborough again had difficulty in find their own men, too often giving the ball away needlessly and Kenilworth tipped as candidates for relegation again this season twice saw efforts cleared off the line by Gunn and Rogers.

A long shot from Sean O'Callaghan went close past the post and brother Paul connected well with a low shot but 'keeper Rouse took it well. Paul O'Callaghan hit the Kenilworth post but the home side were prepared to break quickly and they caught the Loughborough defence too square, lacking in pace and complaining to the linesman as Wells ran through to make it one nil to Kenilworth.

Come half time Loughborough were looking for the equalizer and Aylwood brought a save from Rouse, but they went in a goal down. Manager Barrett made two changes at half time, Stevenson and Barratt came on and the Loughborough side began again trying to retrieve the deficit.

O'Callaghan had a shot saved and the best moment of the game followed as Leon Spencer ghosted past three Kenilworth players to beat the 'keeper for the equalizer. Kenilworth were dead and buried at this stage of the game but Loughborough just didn't have the gumption to finish them off.

The Kenilworth defence cleared one off the line and when O'Callaghan's low cross found Aylwood with the goal at his mercy it should have been game, set and match - but his shot went wide.

Loughborough's attempts to replace last season's flank midfielders continues as this game showed new boy Schultz was not the answer and to cap a poor display he missed an easy chance with just the 'keeper to beat.

As Loughborough simply ran out of ideas Kenilworth saw their chance to pinch all the points and how close they came. Twice 'keeper Keeling made dramatic saves and twice the gods intervened as the Kenilworth striker Allen with no one at all in the goal put the ball wide.

Three draws and a defeat in the first four games for Loughborough is certainly not promotion form. Saturday's visitors to The Drome are Northfield Town, we await with diminishing patience that elusive first win.
