LUFFS 0 OLD HILL 2 (21/2/04)
|
When you are at the bottom things tend to go against you and Saturday was the classic example as The Luffs conceded two of the luckiest goals you are likely to see and then having used all three substitutes lost the services of keeper Paul Springthorpe and centre back Sean Hogan in an horrendous clash of heads and for twenty minutes played the game with ten men.
Loughborough matched fourth placed Old Hill Town for most of this game but for the third week running couldn't find the net when the chances came. The first chance fell to Clayton Penny who didn't connect well with Sul Morina's cross but Old Hill replied and Craig Shaw tested keeper Paul Springthorpe and Wayne Bevan shot just past the post. Springthorpe saved a shot from Greenaway and Dovey saw one past the post for the visitors, but the chance of the half fell to Clayton Penny but with just keeper Dave Harrington to beat the keeper narrowed his angles well and saved.
Loughborough's tail of woe began after thirty minutes as Michael Mulligan limped off but just before the break The Luffs came withing inches of taking the lead as Gareth Rogers cross just missed the outstretched leg of Tom Belton and Herrington gathered the loose ball. Loughborough saw yet another new signing in Donovan Jones and he showed some good touches and came
close to a goal shooting just over before the breakbut limped off injured midway through the second half.
The Luffs began the second half looking good before
things turned against them, Matt Kearn's set up Edmir
Likaj who shot past the post and Clayton Penny was
brought down on the edge of the area in full flight.
Midway through the half with borough looking good for
at least a draw Linden Dovey mis hit his cross and
wrong footed everybody and the ball crept in the net
at the hear post to give Old Hill an undeserved lead.
The Luffs were still very much in the game at this
point and Daniel Brailsford delivered a low cross
which ran to safety at the back post unconnected.
If Old Hills first goal had a touch of good fortune
about it then so did their second as an unthreatening
corner missed keeper, defenders and forwards alike to
trickle over the line at the back post, it was that
man "Lucky" Dovey again. From then open it went pear
shaped for The Luffs as keeper Paul Springthorpe and
central defender Sean Hogan clashed and were taken to
hospital sharing an ambulance and with all three
substitutes used the nine men found themselves with a
mountain to climb. Matt Kearns donned the keepers
jersey and they got on with it and The Luffs very
nearly pulled one back as Edmir Likaj shot across the
goal grazing the post.
In the end nine against eleven took its toll but a
credit to The Luffs, they refuse to concede another
goal and held it at two, Kearns having to make just
one save in his unaccustomed roll.
Saturday evening saw keeper Paul Springthorpe released
from hospital with six stitches in his chin while
defender Sean Hogan recovered sufficiently to be
allowed out of hospital late in the same evening. It
hasn't been a lucky start for new manager Geoff Green,
four new players including three promising strikers
have been out injured. Saturday sees The Luffs
travelling to Fairfield Villa (kick off 2.45 PM) in an
effort to stem the tide of defeats and definitely
looking for a change of fortune.
