LUFFS 1 FAIRFIELD VILLA 2 (17/9/05)

SECOND placed Fairfield Villa left Loughborough with all the points but they will look back and thank their lucky stars and their keeper David Inman who made one of the most remarkable reaction saves that has been seen at The Drome in the dying minutes of the game.

The Luffs were not at their best this afternoon but nevertheless they were a match for the early high fliers and should at least have had a share of the points. The Loughborough keeper Ben Hall was the first to see action down quickly to gather the loose ball but the reply was a long shot from Royston Whittle.

Martin Kearns cleared under pressure while Mick Davis warmed the hands of the Fairfield keeper Inman. Steve Higgins went clear for Loughborough but his shot squirmed wide while Fairfield delivered a low cross forcing Hall to get down quickly.

Fair field upped the tempo and Stuart Hall shot just over and Nathan Broadhurst had keeper Hall at full stretch. It looked as if The Luffs had weathered a storm and were coming back into the game when Steven McGlen rose at The4 back post and powered a header into the top corner, Loughborough went in a goal down at half time.

Managers Anthony Barratt and Darren Barber strengthened their attack for the second half bringing on Paco Box an Leon Fay and it gave the visitors something to think about. Box began by tearing the Fairfiled defence to pieces and the pressure was on. A free kick brought the equaliser, Martin Kean's header didn't get cleared properly and Mick Davis whacked it into the bottom corner.

This was when The Luffs could and indeed should have won this game but their keeper David Inman performed heroically to keep his side in the hunt. Ruben Francis twisted and turned in the box but couldn't get his shot away and Mick Davis planted one on the roof of the net. Fairfield broke away and den Hall saved at the near post but almost immediately Leon Fay had keeper Inman at full stretch.

Fairfield broke again this time the Loughborough defence was stretched too far and a low cross found Ian squire free at the back post and his mis hit shot squirmed into the net for the winning goal. There was time enough for Louthborough to go looking for another equaliser and when Martin Kearns powered a header from two yards out Inman reacted like a cat to push the ball up and over.

This defeat drops the Luffs into eleventh place but they have accrued two games in hand over their rivals and those six points could push them into third place. Saturday see The Luffs travelling to Newhall United (Kick of 2.45 PM) while the following Wednesday sees them away at Rothley Imps in the first round of the Loughborough Charity Cup kick off 7.30 PM.
