BROWNHILLS 0 LUFFS 0 (16/11/02)
|
REFEREE Mangal Singh contemplated a puddle on the Brownhills pitch for a full ten minutes before declaring this game on and although the conditions were not ideal the groundspeople had done their job and overall it was justified.
Not a good result for Loughborough, their eighth draw of the season and with Brownhills sitting in last place a win was expected. Upon reflection the Brownhills side are bottom because they have not played many in the league and on this performance certainly they didn't look candidates for relegation.
Loughborough were technically the better side but Brownhills were typical Mid Com battlers and were not prepared to give anything away. Gunn was first to show with a header that tested 'keeper Horton, but the Brownhills' man showed a good pair of hands throughout his time on the pitch and was never going to be beaten easily.
Aylward hit a long shot just wide and Mould's free kick failed to find a Loughborough player - but it was all one way in the early stages. This was manager Tebbutt's third game in charge and it showed a desire to play the passing game and at times it was impressive to watch.
A find build-up through the midfield gave O'Callaghan a chance at goal but the Loughborough marksman was just wide. After allowing Loughborough to attack for twenty minutes without result Brownhills pulled themselves into the game and tested defenders Boyce and Springthorpe but they got no change there with the Loughborough central defenders beginning to form and impressive partnership.
The Luffs attacked later in the half but they met two stubborn and experienced players in the Brownhills skipper Haddon and keeper Horton who between them managed to keep O'Callaghan and Gunn at bay all afternoon.
Loughborough should have had a goal just before half time Gunn powered his way clear through the centre of the Brownhills defence but his progress was halted by that puddle while Springthorpe had a header saved from close range.
There were chances in the second half to take this game, a free kick from Mould was saved by Horton while Gunn and O'Callaghan combined well only to be smothered out in the penalty area. The Loughborough 'keeper had to be alert to punch a testing cross clear and Watkiss headed clear from a corner as Brownhills had their best moments mid second half.
Rogers had a good chance for The Luffs but his header lack direction. The Brownhills 'keeper Horton limped off the field in the last ten minutes with a mystery injury and Loughborough looked to dip their bread but it wasn't to be.
O'Callaghan saw the stand in 'keeper Whitcroft save his shot with his feet and he was out quickly to save at the feet of Gunn clearly not such a novice as first thought. Loughborough's Dutfield had a shot saved, and on came Johnathan Santry to make his debut for The Luffs and Brownhills had the ball in the net only to be brought back for offside but on this wet and dismal afternoon there were no goals at all.
Manager Simon Tebbutt keeps his unbeaten record and this Saturday Loughborough have a re-arranged fixture at home to Old Hill Town (kick off 2.00 pm).
