LUFFS 0 WILMCOTE 1 (12/2/05)

The rain and wind spoilt this game and one defensive slip decided it but it went the wrong way on merit and ended The Luffs run up the division. The lions share of this game went to Loughborough, but you get nothing if the ball doesn't finish in the net and the Stratford visitors showed clinical finishing, one chance one goal and that was that.

From the start Loughborough took the game to Wilmcote and Paco Box warmed the hands of keeper Adam Traynor in the opening attack. Jason Lane glanced a header just past the post before Wilmcote mounted their first attack with Matt Watkiss clearing under pressure.

Wilmcote found the side netting, but it was watched to safety by keeper Ben Hall while at the other end Nathan Dale hit a wild shot and Rob Matthews curled a shot just wide of the mark. Modou Darboe set up Box with a low cross but Traynor saved the shot comfortably.

Wilmcote were given space and Alex Shaw shot over the bar while Watkiss hit a telling cross but there was no one there to take advantage. It all looked just too comfortable for the Loughborough side but defender Martin Kearns slipped in possession and Joe Wright pounced to pinch the ball and whack it into the top corner.

Darboe latched onto a free kick from Box but the chance was cleared for a corner, Martin Kearns rose above the Wilmcote defence from the corner but headed just over. Watkiss again got a good cross in and it very nearly floated into the Wilmcote net just before the break.

That left the whole of the second half for The Luffs to undo this stubborn Wilmcote defence and they gave it their best but it wasn't to be. An early free kick was wasted, Darboe shot over from close in and it looked like Nathan Dale had found the top corner but his shot was deflected over.

Referee Steve McCathy took the players in for a ten minute break as the heavens opened and resumed as the sun came out but it still wasn't the day of The Luffs.

The youngster Kyle Bryant came on to replace Darboe and came so very close to scoring. Dan Leivers' pin point cross picked him out and the header from close range went just over the bar. Bryant ghosted past two Wilmcote defenders as if they weren't there and beat keeper Traynor with a low shot but it struck the foot of the post and came out to safety.

So Wilmcote held their lead till the end and for all their possession and creativity Loughborough had nothing to show for it. This Saturday sees The Luffs travel to Heather for their local Derby (Kick off 2.45 PM) and given a good result they might just catch them up in the league with games in hand.

The Luffs second string are back in action at The Drome they take on the Christians, Genesis in their last North Leicestershire Division One game. They need to win and survival then is in the hands of the gods in this, their first season, but they still have two cup competitions to go at.
