BURNTWOOD 0 LUFFS 2 (10/9/05) Presidents Cup R1

COULD have been more but two goals away from home and a clean sheet will do, it sent the pundits looking for the last time "The Luffs" got past the first round of the Presidents Cup. The Luffs put in a commanding performance to win this game, never really in doubt but then Burntwood were never given that look in they worked hard for all afternoon.

An early save from the Loughborough keeper from Karl Haddon was a wake up call and the replay was a shot just past the post from Patrick Thomson. Midfielder Mick Davis was brought down in full flight but the Loughborough free kick came to nothing. Simeon Grignon was a tower of strength for The Luffs in midfield and very nearly scored early on lobbing keeper Stuart France and scraping the bar. Royston Whittle set up a chance for Worrell Whitehouse but he p[pulled his shot inches wide of the back post, Loughborough were pushing Burtnwood back and a goal looked very much in the offing.

The best chance of the half fell to Whitehouse, set up by Nathan Dale but he curled his shot just over the bar with just France to beat. Burntwood broke and Darren Painter shot just past the post to give The Luffs a warning shot across the bows. The answer was simple enough, Nathan Dale picked the ball up[ on the edge of the area and whacked it into the top corner. Stuart France made a good save when confronted with Worrell Whitehouse again, the new lad had a good game and deserved a goal.

Burntwood had their best moments late in the first half and Haddon had keeper Ben hall at full stretch to keep the one goal lead in tack at half time.

Simeon Grignon began the second half by warming the hands of keeper Stuart France but he held on well to the power full shot. The second goal came quickly, Whitehouse turned provider and Leon Fay left the Burntwood defence for pace and hit a low shot into the bottom corner. Two non and all over bar the shouting, not in this league, the three man defence of Martin Kearns, Mat Watkiss and Patrick Thomson never gave the Burntwood forwards a look in as the home side committed more men to the attack in an effort to retrieve the deficit.

It left them with big gaps at the back and lough borough should really have dipped their bread. Ruben Francis twice looked to have scored and twice saw his shot cleared off the line. Simeon Grignon went on a mazy run to confront the Burntwood keeper but his deft chip went agonisingly past the post, the big man deserved a goal in this game. Leon Fay had the last of the afternoons chances shooting just wide but the game was well won by then.

The Luffs look to be developing into an impressive football team under the guidance of Darren Barber and Anthony Barrett and well worth watching. This Saturday is a good opportunity, back in Loughborough at The Drome on the Derby Road Playing Fields against Fairfield Villa kick off 2.45 PM. This is a Division One Midland Combination league game with Fairfield in second place and The Luffs in seventh place.
