LUFFS 0 SAFFRON DYNAMO 3 (10/1/04) Leics Senior Cup Quarter-Final
LOUGHBOROUGH took a week of from the riggers of survival in the Midland Combination to take on the Leicestershire Senior League side Saffron Dynamo in the cup and were rightly disappointed not to get something our of this. The three goals (two of which came in the last five minutes) flattered the Senior League side who hung on to an early first half lead desperately at times.

Loughborough began by playing some good passing football but the Leicester side preferred the more direct route and after ten minutes cashing in with a corner and a header from Towe and from that moment on The Luffs were chasing the game against an experienced side who knew all the tricks. Ian Stevenson tested the Saffron keeper Taylor the shot being tipped over the bar and Clayton Penny should have levelled the scores, clear through and shooting just past the post. Danny Brailsford's cross found Penny whose effort finished in the top netting as Loughborough pressed hard for a first half equaliser. Saffron Dynamo forced a series of corners but Loughborough defended well and a save from keeper Paul Springthorpe ended a short spell of pressure. By half time Penny had forced another save from Talyor and The Luffs had done enough to have deserved level pegging at half time but the one goal difference remained.

There was little to chose between the two teams in the second half, Saffron were happy with their one goal lead and never went looking for another while the Loughborough side were just that bit short of the necessary to break down a no nonsense defensive side. Penny had a shot blocked while at the other end Orme shot over the bar. Stevensons free kick tested Taylor while Saffron Dynamos Boyles let fly with a wild shot.

With time running out Loughborough stepped up the pace of the game and Saffron Dynamo had to defend well to keep their lead and there was the inevitable time wasting. As the game drew to a close and the Luffs were building up to an equaliser so bad luck struck The Drome again as Hogans back header left keeper Springthorpe stranded and an own goal settled the issue. In the dying seconds Orme slid in at the back post to make it three and to give his side a very flattering scoreline and to end The Luffs cup run.

Back to the real business this Saturday at home to Burntwood Town (kick off 2.00 PM) and the long hard road to survival in the Midland Combination Division One.
