LUFFS 3 BLACKHEATH 1 (08/09/01) @ The Drome
|
Never
mind the quality see the result with this one as Blackheath proved a non
to good side and showed basically why they are at the foot of the division,
but the Loughborough side never quite got into gear in a game which was
always going one way. Having said that it was three points
and that makes four wins, two draws and one defeat in this seasons campaign,
joint third place and very much in contention with the leaders.
Loughborough put the pressure on Blackheath
from the start as O'Callaghans cross saw keeper Fothergill flapping to
get it cleat and it was no suprise when the home side went ahead.
Rogers provided the cross and Paul O'Callaghan knocked it in from close
range. Any thoughts of a route were ruled out as Blackheath
dug in and indeed had a few moments of threatening the Loughborough goal
as their striker Nicol hit a wild shot over the top and then forced a point
blank save from the Loughborough keeper Springthorpe.
Loughborough made some good progress down
the flanks with Gunn and O'Callaghan both delivering good crosses but they
went unattended. Skipper Mould hit a free kick well over the top but he
was the man who provided the cross for Paul O'Callaghan to make it two
non and comfortable for the Loughborough side. Blackheath sense a
degree of complacency from Loughborough and Swifty delivered a shot to
test Springthorpe but he was well positioned and held it well. It
was enough to wake up the home side and the half finished with Blackheath
defending in depth and clearing a shot from Gunn off the line.
With the wind at their backs the expected
glut of goals never came as Blackheath packed their defence and the level
of the game deteriorated. The highlight of the half was an individual goal
from Paul O'Callaghan taking on most of the Blackheath defence
and beating them to complete his hat trick. Therebye emulating his
brother Sean O'Callaghan who saw a hat trick in the first game of the season,
if they both continue in this vain there will be little room on the mantlepeice
for matchballs as it was duly signed and presented in the clubhouse
along with the now traditional bottle of champagne. There are
some interesting traditions growing within this new Loughborougth football
club.
At three non this game was all over and
done with but Blackheath hadn't read the script and sneaked in to pinch
a goal in the last minute of the game to score a soft goal and rob a few
players of their clean sheet bonus. The conclusion, the Loughborough side
had played far better on tuesday night and lost by the odd goal at Mile
Oak and there is the underlying feeling this team can play much better
than this given the right challenge. There were some interesting results
from the day, Knowle lost their unbeaten record to the team of the moment
Rugby and Mile Oak lost by four goals to Wilmcote it is all opening up
as expected.
This saturday sees Loughborough at home
again(kick off 2.45 pm) to Kenilworth Town another team from the lower
reaches but beware, as last seasons relegation battle showed, they have
an untapped source of non league players down the A46 which have a habit
of appearing in times of stress.
